About the Artist
Mildred Brown (1891-1969) took up painting as a hobby in 1948 in Laguna. Though largely self-taught, she also received instruction from Bennett Bradbury, Ralph Love, and Robert Wood. Brown was an active member of various art organizations including the Valley Artist Guild, California Art Club, American Institute of Fine Arts, and the Laguna Beach Art Association. Throughout her career, she received numerous awards and recognitions for her work, including first prizes for portraits at the Valley Artist Guild and honorable mentions at various exhibitions. She also won awards for her portraits and landscapes from organizations such as the California Art Club and the Los Angeles Tennis Club. Notably, she was invited to exhibit her work at the Laguna Art Festival in 1960 as part of the Laguna Beach Art Association. Brown's painting subjects were influenced by her extensive travels and the landscapes she encountered, particularly those around Laguna.
