About the Artist
Dorothy Kobara (1927-2016), a significant figure in the Japanese American community, played pivotal roles in establishing an Issei senior center and organizing the Japanese Cultural Festival in Santa Cruz. However, her journey took a significant turn when, in her early 40s, she discovered a passion for oil painting, marking a profound moment of self-realization. Reflecting on her initial encounter with the canvas, she exclaimed, "Where have I been?" This moment ignited a passion that drove her to dedicate five decades to studying, teaching, and creating art.
In an American Artist magazine cover story, Kobara emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities, stating, "You know time is of the essence, and the choices you make are the ones you want to follow."
Throughout her prolific career, Kobara produced over 1400 original oil paintings, that now grace museums, galleries, and private collections worldwide. Her legacy transcends her cultural and physical stature, leaving an indelible mark on the art world.
