About the Artist
Denise Burns was born in Belleville, New Jersey and raised in La Jolla, California. She received her art education during independent study in Europe, as well in the United States at the Ovanes Berberian School of Art, founded by the Russian plein-air artist of that name; at the Scottsdale Artist School in Arizona; and at the Sergei Bongart School of Art in Idaho. Burns began exhibiting in 1988, and her work has been shown both in the U.S. and in Europe.
In speaking about her painting, the artist says: "Capturing the quality of light, its effect on an object, the excitement of color and the feeling of the atmosphere are the goals I search for in each of my paintings. Rather than grand vistas, I gravitate to the small corners of the world - things people see out of the corners of their eyes. Relationships attract me: The love between a parent and child, a tender second between siblings, the way a tree leans over to brush the ground. I want to capture that on canvas, that moment, that feeling, the traits that make us human, or the rhythm that is nature….”
Burn's national affiliations include the California Art Club; Catalina Art Association; and Oil Painters of America. She is founder (1986) of the Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA), and led the movement to form the Society for the Advancement of Plein Air Painting (SAPAP) whose purpose was to produce a plein-air show and to educate the public about plein air painting. That group was incorporated as a nonprofit entity in 1997.
