Dale Chihuly’s Macchia series is a platform to experiment with the endless variations and capabilities of color in the medium of glass, transforming a static experience into a visceral encounter with color and light.
The 2023 Mojave Macchia Studio Edition is a classic example of the driving force behind Chihuly’s original vision for the Macchia: “unbelievable combinations of color.” A constellation of multicolored speckles emblazes the rich violet exterior of the sculpture, while an oxblood red body wrap provides faint yet profound contrast and depth. Glass and color, stretched thin by heat, breath, and centrifugal force, create glimmers of illumination from the brilliant marigold interior, and the form’s organic undulations are defined by the moss green lip wrap.
Every year, Chihuly creates new Studio Editions, representing Chihuly’s most distinctive series. As every piece is handblown, your artwork may vary slightly in size, color, and shape. Small blemishes or imperfections in the glass are part of the glass blowing process and add to the individual characteristics of each piece.
About the Artist
Born in Tacoma, Washington in 1941, Dale Chihuly has become one of the most recognized artists of his time. He is credited for pushing the boundaries of the glass medium, a previously considered fragile material, from singular symmetrical forms into towering and gravity defying assembled sculptures. Chihuly’s energetic and magnificent artworks are created in a hot shop with the assistance of a team of glass blowers, the same method practiced among traditional Italian glass artisans for centuries. Over his career, Chihuly has mastered the alluring, translucent and transparent qualities of glass in an effort to create works of art that transform the viewing experience. His unique artistic vision and desire to experiment with this medium in terms of scale and range of color has led to the elevation of the art form. Education and collaboration among artists has always been essential to Chihuly, who continues to inspire new generations of glassmakers.
