William Zorach (American, 1887-1966) watercolor and pencil on paper modernist Western landscape painting depicting a massive tree trunk surrounded by smaller, stylized trees. Possibly painted during the artist's travels in Yosemite Valley in 1920. Possible unfinished mountain to left center of image. Signed "William Zorach" in pencil, lower right, and dated 1920. Matted and framed under glass in a molded, stained wood frame. Sight: 15" H x 12 1/2" W. Frame: 24" H x 20" W.
Biography: "Born in Eurburg, Lithuania on Feb. 28, 1887, William Zorach was brought to the U.S. in 1891. He grew up in Cleveland and later worked as a lithographer while studying at night at the Cleveland School of Art. The winters of 1907 and 1908 were spent in New York City studying at the National Academy of Design. He spent the year 1920 in Yosemite Valley which resulted in dozens of watercolors, drawings, and oils of the area." Zorach exhibited at the 1913 Armory Show in New York and the LACMA in 1940.
