Joseph Delaney (Tennessee/New York, 1904-1991) archive. 1st item: Folded 'mock up' of Journal of the Art Students League of New York publication, Volume 18, Number 8, dated November, 1965. Front cover with sketched charcoal horseshoe with overlay of female nude sketches and black and white photograph of a painting in the lobby of the Art Students League, all sketches with the initials "JD". Art Students League seal upper left. Interior contains three (3) ink drawings all titled "Studies from the Sketch Pad, Joe Delaney, 1974". Sketches include one depicting Washington Square Park and nudes from a sketch class. All signed "JD". Additional note to interior page reads "Work owned by New York City Museum, Huntington Hartford Smithsonian Institute". 9" H x 12" W. 2nd item: Undated black and white photographic print of Joseph. 10 3/4" H x 13 1/2" W. 3rd item: Strathmore artist's spiral notebook with a collection of 11 poems by Joseph Delaney, some with sketches, several about nature or love, three dated in 1981 and another dated July 1979. Notebook: 8 1/2" H x 6" W. Biography: Joseph Delaney was born in Knoxville in 1904. He and his older brother, Beauford, discovered their interest in art by drawing on Sunday School cards. In 1930, Joseph left Tennessee for New York where Beauford was also working as an artist, and enrolled in the Art Students League under the tutelage of Thomas Hart Benton and Alexander Brooke. The subject matter he found there, including the city's landmarks and its people, are the images for which he is best known. In 1986, Delaney returned to Knoxville to live and was artist-in-residence for the University of Tennessee Art Department until his death in 1991. Delaney's works are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Chicago Art Institute, The Knoxville Museum of Art, and The Smithsonian American Art Museum.
