A group of figures gather in the shadows at right while the mohel performs the circumcision. Signed and dated "Rembrandt f[ecit] 1654" in the plate, upper left, and additionally in shadows at center left. Inscribed "a" in brown ink en verso, likely an unidentified collector's mark. White and Boon's first state of two; New Hollstein's second state of five. Plate: 3 11/16" H x 5 5/8" W. Sheet: 3 7/8" H x 5 13/16" W. Ref.: Bartsch, Hollstein (White and Boon) 47; Hind 274; Biorklund 54-B; New Hollstein 280.
PROVENANCE: By descent in the Acklen family of Belmont Mansion, Nashville, likely acquired 4th quarter 19th century.
A richly-inked impression with strong contrasts and no signs of wear and inky plate edges. With the empty spaces along the upper and upper-left edges. Faint marginal discoloration to extreme upper left, lower left, and right corners, outside of plate. With thin, Japan paper hinges affixed to upper left and right en verso.
