British School, 19th century oil on board portrait of a horse standing in a barn stall with small white puppy at his feet. Signed "R. Fillans" and dated 1864 or 1867, lower center. Birdseye maple frame with gilt sight edge. Sight: 16" H x 19 1/2" W. Frame: 21" H x 24" W.
PROVENANCE: By descent from John Clark of New York (b. 1891-d. 1974). Clark was a thoroughbred owner and President of the Hialeah Park Race Course; he was also president of the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of the United States, treasurer of the New York Racing Association, a director at Belmont and Saratoga tracks, and a member of the Turf Committee of America. Painting needs cleaning. Several scattered small losses, inclusions, and abrasions to surface of painting, including a 1/2" scratch to horse's head and 1/2" scratch to center background. White inclusion drip center of painting between horse's hooves. Small area of bloom and a 1/4" flaking blister lower left corner. Some wear, abrasions and small surface losses to frame.
