Two (2) Albert Paley (American, b. 1944) large-scale landscape sculptures composed of intertwined layers of fabricated steel with a "naturally rusted" applied patina, supported on square bases and measuring approximately 116" H and 110" H x 40 "W and 26" D. The taller of the two is signed "Albert Paley" and dated 1999.
Biography: American modernist metal sculpture Albert Paley earned B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees at Tyler School of Art and Temple University during the 1960s and served on the faculty of the School for American Craftsmen at Rochester Institute of Technology and the State University of New York at Brockport. In 1974 he won the Renwick Gallery's national design competition and was awarded the commission to design decorative metalwork doors for the gallery shop. His Portal Gates led to numerous commissions and world renown for his monumental architectural ironwork and sculpture, which pays homage to European Art Nouveau and American Abstract Expressionism.
Surface oxidation due to partly to outside exposure and to the artist's use of a "naturally rusted patina". Scattered abrasions and scratches up to 4". Some corrosion to square bases. Each is fitted with metal brackets en verso for support against a building if desired.
Commissioned by Dr. Gary and Katherine Gutow of Nashville in 1999. A copy of installation instructions for the sconces from the Paley Studios is available to the winning bidder.
