Pair of 18th century British panoramic colored engravings, one titled "The North Prospect of Woolwich, in the County of Kent" and the other titled "The North-West Prospect to Sheerness, in the County of Kent, by Nathaniel Buck, active 1727 - 1753, and his brother Samuel Buck, 1696 - 1779. Created circa 1739, both engravings depict the respective town in each title with a description below and glossory of important landmarks and buildings. Housed in matching giltwood frames. Engraving: 12 1/4" H x 31 3/4" W. Sight: 13" H x 32 3/4" W. Framed: 16 1/2" H x 36 1/2" W. Note: The town of Woolwich had become a leading military and industrial town and was home to the Dockyard, Royal Arsenal, Royal Military Academy, and the Royal Horse Artillery at the time of this engraving. Artist's note: Brothers Samuel and Nathaniel Buck made their names as leading British topographical draughtsmen of the 18th century. Over a period of 34 years, the Bucks produced several hundred drawings and engravings, including 87 engraved prospects of England and Wales. These are now important visual records of the appearance of British urban landscapes prior to the changes that occurred during the Industrial Revolution. In some cases, the places depicted have since disappeared or changed beyond recognition (UK Government Art Collection).
Both with center fold (in the making) with toning and minor scattered foxing. Frames with minor scattered abrasions. Engravings have not been examined out of the frame.
