19th century pieced and applique cotton quilt, Rose of Sharon pattern variant, likely made in Ohio, featuring 9 floral medallions within a meandering vine border. White borders separating the nine medallions are quilted. Off-white ground with solid red, pink, yellow, and green appliques. Straight applied matching green binding. Densely quilted throughout at 6-8 stitches per inch with feathered wreath and cross-hatch designs. Thin batting. Backing is made of 3 panels; 2 at 32 inches wide and one panel 20 inches. 83" x 86 1/4". Likely made Ohio, 1870-1900.
Overall very good condition. Secure stitching throughout in both applique and quilting. Minor fading to the green applique in the quilt. Scattered minor spotting to quilt top with some browning more prominent on one corner. Evidence of staining on the fold lines on backing. Overall excellent example of 19th century applique quilt.
Quilt has descended in Salisbury/Russell/Hysell families in Meigs County, Ohio. Likely made by Charlotte Russell (1846-1906) mother of Anna Russell Hysell. Anna was Chas Crow's grandmother.
