New Hampshire school girl needlework embroidered Sampler, silk and wool or cotton on lined linen, by Lydia C. Martin, 1849. Red floral border enclosing three alphabets separated by decorative borders and ending in the word "LOVE," over a common verse, "Jesus permit thy name to stand..." and a pictorial scene of dog seated in front of a white house in a landscape setting. Signed LYDIA C. MARTIN AGED 11 YEARS. 1849. Housed in a simple, possibly original wood frame, under glass. Sight - 16"H x 12"W. Frame - 18"H x 14 1/2"W. Note: the stitcher of this sampler is likely Lydia Cole or Cote Martin, b. 1838 in Richmond, NH to Leason K. Martin and Lydia Harris Martin. She married Joseph Brown Abbott (b. 1835) and they had two children. She died in 1893 in Concord, New Hampshire.
Sampler is in extremely good condition with light, even toning to ground, and a few small spots of loss to red threads. Not examined out of frame. Frame has multiple veneer chips.
