Middle Tennessee, attrib. Dekalb County, Sheraton sugar table, cherry with walnut drawer sides and poplar drawer bottoms. Plain, two-board top over a single deep dovetailed drawer with brass keyhole surround, supported on four ring turned and tapering legs ending in flattened ball and spike feet. Feet tips have been ebonized. 29 14" H x 24 1/2" W x 23 1/2" D. Circa 1850.
Top has been re-set and now overhangs the table more in the front than in the back; the top has old newspaper remnants on the underside. Missing lock. Some wear, warping, staining, and shrinkage to top; shrinkage to side of case and drawer bottom. Pulls are original; repair and split to right front knob. 2" area of loss of color to left front corner of stile.
The estate of James Mullinax, who lived in the oldest house in Alexandria, Tennessee. His relatives on his mother's side were the Adamsons. This family has lived in Dekalb County since approximately 1800, when patriarch Jesse T. Adamson (1758-1825) emigrated from Virginia. Jesse Adamson is buried in neighboring Wilson County, but his line of descendants through Jimmy Mullinax have all been born or buried in Dekalb County (which was formed in 1837). The original owner of this table was possibly William D. Adamson (1828-1863), who served in the Civil War in Company B, Allison's Tennessee Cavalry Squadron, CSA, and was killed in battle.
