Lucie (Lucille) Hartrath (IL/MA, 1868 - 1962) oil on canvas impressionist landscape painting depicting large trees and two pathways in the foreground and a village steeple visible in the left background. Signed lower right "L. Hartrath". Housed in a carved giltwood frame, painted mat, and giltwood liner. Sight: 11 1/2" H x 15 1/2" W. Framed: 18 3/8" H X 22 3/8" W. Artist's Biography: Lucie Hartrath was born in Boston but is most associated with Chicago and Indiana, where she became known for her impressionist landscapes. Hartrath studied with John Vanderpoel at the Art Institute of Chicago and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. By 1901 she was in Europe, where she exhibited at the Paris Salon and in Berlin, Dusseldorf, and Munich. She also studied with Angelo Jank in Munich. In 1908 Hartrath established a studio in Chicago and began painting in Nashville (Brown County), Indiana. She exhibited at the Chicago Municipal Art League and the Hoosier Salon, and was a founding member of the Chicago Women's Salon. (Source: the Illinois Women Artists Project).
