- Lot Description
Charleston, South Carolina coin silver salver with chased shell pattern rim, marked J. Ewan in serrated rectangle (John Ewan, working 1823-1852). Monogrammed JBW (?) on base. 1" H x 5 1/8" dia. Also included with this lot are six coin silver spoons attributed to Northern makers: Pair tablespoons with fiddle tipt handles with engraved leaf decoration and monogram EY, marked on backs Willard and Hawley (Syracuse, NY, 1844-1859), and "premium", 9 1/4" L; Dessert spoon marked J. Farr (New York, c. 1835), monogrammed MF on handle, 7 1/4" L; Dessert spoon with fiddle tipt handle, marked L. Kent (Ohio, mid 19th c.), 7 1/2" L; Teaspoon with reverse tipt handle marked Benedict & Scudder (New York, mid 19th c.), monogrammed MAA, 6 1/8" L.; Teaspoon with reverse tipt handle marked E. Benjamin & Co (Connecticut, c. 1835), monogrammed AP. 10.46 oz troy combined weight. Provenance: Estate of James J. Allen, Knoxville, TN. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)Salver: Overall very good condition with scattered minor scratches and small dents to surface, largest is 3/8" L. Spoons: One tablespoon with thumbprint dent; one teaspoon with slight bend and small dent, other teaspoon with fleabite and minor dents. Others in good condition.
