- Lot Description
George III mahogany tall case clock with rocking ship moon phase dial signed G. Monks, Prescott. Oak and pine secondary woods; 8 day brass works. Swan's neck pediment with brass rosettes and urn and eagle finials over cobalt reverse painted glass panels having gilt foliate decoration, over an arched dial with Arabic numerals, pierced steel hands, seconds and calendar apertures, and enameled floral decoration, flanked by full fluted columns and resting on a base with rope inlaid molding. The waist is topped by a veneered frieze with inlaid conch shells over a scalloped and veneered door, flanked by fluted quarter columns supported on inlaid plinths atop base molding. The base section features a figured veneer panel edged in rope inlay, rope inlaid canted corners, and a bracket base. Pendulum and pulleys present. 90 1/2"H x 22 1/2"W x 9 1/2"D. English, c. 1800. Note: Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World by Brian Loomes lists two George Monks. The first George was born in 1750 and died in 1815. His son, George (II), the Maker of this example, was born in 1775 and died in 1827. Both father and son worked in Prescott, England outside Liverpool in Lancaster County.

Condition
Eagle finial and the carved plinth base beneath it may be replacements. Bracket base is likely a 19th century replacement. Scattered small minor areas of missing and/or replaced inlay, veneer and molding (largest is 1", to lower corner of waist plinth on right side). Missing seconds hand. Functionality of the brass works not tested or guaranteed. A winding key and four weights found near the clock are available to the winning bidder; they may or may not belong to the clock. Area of pest damage and loss to interior of waist door and an open pest hole to the back board. Dial exhibits some minor losses to paint but does not appear to have been repainted under UV light. Gap between dial edge and case edge. Front center section of hood appears slightly pushed in.
