After Edward Weston (American, 1886-1958) silver gelatin photograph depicting the African American sculptor William Edmondson (Tennessee, 1874-1951) standing in his Nashville yard, smiling, with his arms crossed and dressed in his work attire. Titled "William Edmondson, Tennessee." Printed by Cole Weston (1919-2003) from his father's original 1941 negative. With Edward Weston's stamped signature, the title, and the negative date in pencil en verso along with Cole Weston's pencil signature. Float mounted on white cardstock and housed in a contemporary black metal frame. Photograph: 9 1/2" H x 7 1/2" W. Framed: 20 1/4" H x 16 1/4" W. Note: Photographer Edward Weston visited Tennessee while creating images for a new edition of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass in 1941. A significant number of the photographs he took while in Nashville were of Edmondson, who had recently become the first African American to have a solo exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art.
