Continental School, likely Dutch or Flemish, 17th century oil on wood panel bust-length portrait of a man with goatee, dressed in the attire of a burgher, including ruff and wide-brimmed black hat. Unsigned. Housed in a painted wood frame. Panel: 13 3/4" H x 11 1/4" W. Framed: 19 1/4" H x 17 1/4" W.
Overall very good condition. Panel has likely been cut down on all sides, with split or addition bisecting panel approximately 1" from left edge, and minor losses around seam. Scattered scratches without loss, longest to lower left shoulder, 2" L, and under left eye and to mustache below right cheek, both 1 1/4" L. Minor, stable tenting to 1/2" x 1" area in lower left shoulder. Grime and very fine, scattered passages of abrasion and craquelure throughout. Inscribed "Pullin" in script to left side of ruff, only visible under U/V light. Panel is slightly convex. Frame with abrasions and minor accretions.
