Collection of 24 Andrew Jackson (b. 1767-d. 1845, President 1829-1837) engraved and lithograph portraits and related prints. Engravers and sources include Harrison, J. Lion, Kearny, John Vanderlyn, P. Maverick after S. Waldo (2), Childs & Inman after Hubard; Endicott & Swett; C.G. Childs after J. Wood (titled "Protector and Defender of Beauty & Bounty"); Gimbrede after Wheeler; Sartain after Hubard (2), and James Longacre after a painting by Ralph E.W. Earl in the collection of the Hermitage. Several other prints do not contain publication or artist information. Of special note is a memorial print "in Memory of Andrew Jackson the Illustrious Patriot, Statesman and Hero," and a print of Jackson mounted to a red silk ribbon from the Jackson Society Dinner of Jan. 8, 1923. There is also a Mogul cigarette silk portrait of Jackson, lithographs of late life photos of Jackson portraits, and a woodcut print depicting "the house near Natchez where it is said Andrew Jackson was married Aug. 1791" by Bernhardt Wall, pencil signed; these and the Dinner ribbon date early 20th century. All other items 19th century. Sheet sizes range from 3 1/2" x 2 3/4" to 14 3/4" x 11 3/4".
Print by Longacre after Earl is matted and framed; Bernhardt Wall etching is matted. Mat in poor condition, print with sunning; all other items encapsulated (not laminated) in protective plastic sheeting. All items overall good condition with expected toning, light foxing, minor edge chips, and creases, some possibly trimmed. One of the Maverick after Waldo prints has significant edge discoloration and full deep horizontal crease with some associated losses.
Estate of Gertude S. Caldwell, Nashville.
