ALS and other ephemera bearing the signatures of Civil War Generals A.P. Stewart, Ormsby Mitchel, Richard Ewell, Joseph Wheeler. 1st item: Civil War Confederate Gen. Alexander P. Stewart (1821-1908) ALS dated Lebanon, TN, June 16, 1866, to Henry Watterson, part owner of the Republican Banner newspaper, pleading for work. Stewart writes that "the close of the war left me in debt... threatened with a foreclosure of the mortgage [on his house].... I am making what money I can in this county surveying and dividing land for sale to provide... for my family & pay something on my debts..." He goes on to write, "There is plenty of work in me yet if I can only get hold of some that will pay well - think I could manage a railroad or almost any kind of business." Note: Rogersville, Tennessee born Stewart fought at the Battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Stone's River, Perryville, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta, Franklin and Nashville. Failing to find sustainable work after the war in Tennessee, Stewart eventually left his home state of Tennessee and moved to Missouri, where he became an insurance executive. He later served as Chancellor of the University of Mississippi and commissioner of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. 2nd item: (Future) Union General and astronomer Ormsby M. Mitchel (1810-1862) ALS to (future) CSA General Alexander P. Stewart, dated June 9, 1848. Stewart was working as a professor at Cumberland University at the time, and Mitchel, who had recently built the Cincinnati Observatory, writes of academic matters and also delivers the news that "a fifth new asteroid has just been discovered [and].. has not yet been named." 3rd item: CSA General Richard Stoddard Ewell (1817-1872) signed document appointing Williams Reynolds Jr. of Baltimore power of attorney related to his stock in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, dated July 17, 1868, and notarized by A.S. Thurmond, Davidson County, TN. Ewell was known as Stonewall Jackson's mentee and participated in the Shenandoah Valley Campaigns, the Manassas Campaign, Gettysburg, the Battle of Spotsylvania, and the Appomattox, during which he was taken prisoner. After the war he settled in Spring Hill, TN. 4th item: CSA General Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906) pencil signed telegram, dated 1902, to Adj. F. Reily, War Dept., Chicago, stating "Your message received and read." The telegram is accompanied by an envelope from the War Department addressed to Wheeler in Alabama, enclosing a land survey document titled "the Dekalb Property." Joseph Wheeler fought the Battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Perryville, Stones River, Ft. Donelson, Chicamauga, and Missionary Ridge. A total of 16 horses were said to have been shot from under him. After the war, he served as a U.S. General in the Spanish American War and a congressman from Alabama. 5th item: Book by Sam Davis Elliot, SOLDIER OF TENNESSEE: General Alexander P. Stewart and the Civil War in the West, published by the Louisiana State University Press, 1999.
Stewart letter (single page) is fragile, with staining upper right front side, one corner detached and separations/losses at fold lines. Stewart's signature remains in good condition. Mitchel letter (2 pages) has lost a quarter of the back sheet and a small area at top center of back sheet. All losses are in blank areas and the front page, upon which the actual letter is written, is in very good condition. There is a fold across Mitchel's signature. Ewell document has a small loss to the side, overall good condition, good signature. Wheeler telegram: fading, telegram is fragile with separations at fold lines. Signature good. Land survey and envelope are toned with some losses. Book in good condition, light wear to dustjacket.
