1st item: Letter related to the President Martin Van Buren and Eastin/Polk Families, written to Mary Ann Eastin Polk, from a "M. Van Buren", discussing a recent trip to England, specifically a visit to Lord Byron's former estate, and Thanksgiving plans. (Prior to her marraige to Lucius Polk, Miss Eastin was romantially involved with one of the sons of Martin Van Buren; that son -probably Major Abraham Van Buren- is likely the author of this letter). Undated. Written on both sides of a single piece of paper, creased along the middle. Housed in a wooden frame painted black. Sight - 9" H x 14 1/2" W. Framed - 9 3/4" H x 15 1/4" W. 2nd through 13th items: Group of twelve 19th century books from Hamilton Place, 3 volumes from Don Quixote signed "Van Polk", 4 books with Yeatman bookplate, 5 signed with various Yeatman family member signatures. Titles include "Don Quixote" Vols. II, III, and IV, translated from the Spanish of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, 1818, "Lalla Rookh an Oriental Romance" by Thomas Moore, ESQ., 1854, "The History of Missions" by The Rev. William Brown, M.D., 1816, "Les Mysteres de Paris" Vols. 1-2 and 3-4, by Eugene Sue, 1843 plus 5 miscellaneous books, 1" x 2 1/2" x 4 1/8" to 2" x 7 1/2" x 10 3/4". 14th Item: Gelatin Photo Print of St. John's Episcopal Church in Columbia, TN, near the James K. Polk House. The church is depicted from the side behind a stone wall and trees. Housed in a black painted wooden frame. Sight - 9 3/4" H x 13 1/8" W. Framed - 20 1/2" H x 23 3/4" W. 1st group: Books in fragile condition. Worn covers, spine and edge wear, foxing on most pages. Cover of smaller book and dictionary separated. 2nd item: Some water damage, toning to letter, primarily along creases. Frame held together with tape. 3rd item: Gelatin print in good condition. Not removed from frame. Foxing on matte.
