Attributed to Job B. Spencer (New York/ Pennsylvania/ Connecticut/ Michigan,1829-1899) oil on canvas landscape painting titled "Shenandoah Valley" depicting a view of what is now the Shenandoah National Park located in Virginia, with a central farmhouse surrounded by trees with verdant foliage and grassy fields, a figure in the foreground laundering clothing in a body of water, and mountains in the background, all under a hazy sky. Signed "Spencer" lower right. Housed in gilt and gesso frame with grape corner decoration. Sight: 15 1/2" H x 21" W. Framed: 22" H x 27. Note: This work was received as a wedding gift to Imogene Ide and William Henry Watson, the grandparents of Illinois State Senator, Frank Watson. The painting remained in the Watson collection until it was purchased by the consigner at the Watson's estate sale in Greenville, Illinois in 2002. The identification of the artist and the Shenandoah Valley area, where this work was painted, was passed down by oral history from the wife of Frank Watson to the consigner upon its purchase. Included in the purchase of this lot is an appraisal issued by Jane C.H. Jacob, LTD in 2003, which includes information about the condition, location, dating, and artist, and validates the attribution provided by the Watsons.
Painting has undergone restoration for prior lifting and flaking in upper right corner, hole patched (visible en verso) with associated retouching, and repaired tear on left side. Some rubbing to the stretcher along the upper margin.
