Note: Alfred Stieglitz became interested in African sculpture after being introduced to it in 1909 by the artist Max Weber. In 1914, Stieglitz organized an exhibition titled "Statuary in Wood by African Savages - The Root of Modern Art" at the 291 Galleries in New York. It was the first exhibition in the U.S. focused entirely on African artifacts as fine art. Stieglitz scholar and curator Sarah Greenough attributes this photograph to Stieglitz, in connection with this exhibit.
