Alfred Heber Hutty (Charleston, South Carolina, 1877-1954), “Southern Transport,” pencil on paper landscape drawing, signed lower right “A Hutty 1937” and inscribed “composition for etching,” lower left, likely in reference to Hutty’s etching “On the Way Home” (Ox Cart). The drawing depicts an African American woman and man traveling in an ox-pulled wagon down a rural lane with a cabin and trees in the background. Additional pencil drawing en verso depicts a bust-length portrait of a man wearing a tie. Beige mat and later ebonized molded frame. 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" sight, 15" x 16 1/2" framed. Biography: Alfred Hutty was born in the Midwest, attended the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and worked for Tiffany Studios in New York, but is best known for views of life in his adopted city of Charleston, SC. He became a leading figure of the Charleston Renaissance group of artists, and directed the school of the Carolina Art Association at the Gibbes Art Gallery. Provenance: private Middle Tennessee collection. (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook)
