Alexander Dzigurski (American, 1911-1995) oil on canvas coastal landscape painting depicting waves churning against a rocky shoreline; overhead, clouds build against a rising or setting sun. Signed lower right. Housed in a whitewashed, Rococo-style carved wood frame. Canvas: 24" H x 36" W. Frame: 30" H x 42" W.
Alexander Dzigurski Sr. was born in Eastern Europe and attended the School of Art in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. He arrived in New York in 1949 and by 1952 was on the West Coast. Although he painted landscapes across America, he was perpetually inspired by the coastlines of California and Oregon, and the Chicago Tribune dubbed him "The Poet of the Sea." His paintings can be found in the Franklin Mint Museum of American Art in Pennsylvania, the Republic Bank of Dallas, The Michigan Bank of Chicago, Illinois, the Ravenswood Bank of Chicago, Illinois, and at the Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, Illinois.
