Seven (7) Tennessee geological survey reports including 4 by Gerard Troost (Netherlands/Tennessee, 1776-1850), first State Geologist, with three rare 1840 Tennessee maps. 1st item: FIFTH GEOLOGICAL REPORT TO THE TWENTY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF TENNESSEE, MADE NOVEMBER 1839, by Gerard Troost, published by J. Geo. Harris, Public Printer, Nashville, 1840. Includes three original fold-out maps, all 1840. First map is hand-colored and entitled "Section of the State of Tennessee from two of the most Eastern extremities of the State, Roane Mountain in Carter Co[unt]y and Smoky Mountain in Cocke Co[unt]y." Second map is hand-colored and entitled "Geological Map of the State of Tennessee by G. Troost Geologist of the State." Third map is entitled "Geological Map of Cocke County, East Tenn. by G. Troost." Book is rebound. 9 5/8" H x 5 15/16" W x 7/16" D. 2nd item: Troost's third report, published by S. Nye and Co., Printers to the House, Nashville, 1835, and inscribed "To Rives, Esq. - with the respect of the author," presumably by Troost. Map is missing. Book is rebound. 9" H x 5 1/2" W x 5/16" D. 3rd item: Troost's seventh report, published by W. F. Bang & Co. and B. R. McKennie, Printers, Nashville, 1844. Book is rebound. 8 1/2" H x 5 1/2" W x 5/16" D. 4th item: Troost's ninth report, published by W. F. Bang & Co., Public Printers, Nashville, 1848. With two engraved plates divided into four sections and illustrating a variety of furnace types. Book is rebound. 9" H x 6" W x 3/8" D. 5th item: A GEOLOGICAL RECONNOISSANCE OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE; BEING THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BIENNIAL REPORT PRESENTED TO THE THE THIRTY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF TENNESSEE, DECEMBER, 1855, by James M. Safford, published by G. C. Torbett & Co. State Printers, 1856. 9 1/4" H x 6" W x 5/8" D. 6th item: A rebound copy of Safford's 1855 first biennial report. 8" H x 5 1/2" W x 1/2" D. 7th item: A SKETCH OF THE GEOLOGY OF TENNESSEE, by Richard O. Currey, published by Kinsloe & Rice, Knoxville, 1857. Inscription on flyleaf reads: Eugene [?] Heardy / Civil & [illegible] Engineer / Western & Atlantic Railroad / Atlanta, GA / 1857. 8 1/2" H x 5 1/2" W x 1/2" D. Note: Dr. Gerard Troost, a native of the Netherlands, was Tennessee's first State Geologist and first President of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. He was a professor of chemistry, geology, and mineralogy at the University of Nashville for 22 years (Courtesy of Tennessee State Library & Archives).
