1st item: Circular papier mache box with printed top depicting early 19th century U.S. diplomat Jonathan Russell Esq., Minister Plenipotentiary, 3 1/2" diameter. Some wear and scratching to exterior, 1/4" area of loss to edge of lower section. 2nd item: Lacquered snuff box, centered with a watercolor portrait of a veiled woman with Middle Eastern scene in the background, signed illegibly lower left, Friedi--? 2 3/8" diameter. Light fading, 1/2" loss to inner rim, some pieces retained. 3rd item: Gutta percha snuff box with central inset medallion of Francois Ier Empereur D'Autriche (Emperor of Austria, b. 1768-d. 1835), circular with molded spiral edges, 3". Oxidation to medallion, wear to exterior, 1-1/2" area of loss to bottom of lid. 4th item: 8-sided oblong papier mache snuff box with gilt stenciled design to top, 2 7/8" L. Light wear and scratching. 5th item: Ivory snuff box painted with a city scene on one side and lake landscape on the reverse, 3 1/8"L. Probably Italian. 1 1/2" age crack to side with city scene, some glue repairs, wear to paint. All early to mid 19th century. Provenance: Estate of Mrs. Mary Ann Bowers Thomas, Athens, Alabama.
