Group of three (3) quilts, including Southern. 1st item: Garden of Eden pattern quilt, hand pieced and hand quilted. Rendered with cotton fabrics in colors of brown, blue, red and pink; some with printed designs and woven check designs. The top is applied to an off-white patterned backing, folded to front along three edges. There is a recently added separate binding to lower edge with newer fabric. 78" H x 69" W. American, late 19th century, c. 1880s.
2nd item: Hickory Leaf pattern quilt, mostly hand pieced, appliqued and quilted. Rendered with cotton fabrics in colors of red and brown. Cotton batting appears to be hand-carded, which contributes to the thickness. Separately applied machine stitched brown binding. 80" H x 71" W. Southern, c. 1880s or 1890s.
3rd item: Pieced block pattern quilt, all hand pieced and hand quilted, top rendered with wool utilitarian fabrics, in colors of red, brown, black, gray and beige. Rope or triple-cable stitch pattern to red borders. Top is applied to cotton red and pink backing, and finished with a separately applied faced pink binding, which is visible only from back. 73" H x 73" W. Possibly Canadian. Early 20th century, c.1900-1910.
All with wear commensurate with age/use. 1st item: Minor scattered staining or discoloration. Rebound lower edge with newer fabric. Minor losses, primarily to brown fabrics or brown prints. 2nd item: Scattered losses to fabric, mainly brown fabrics. Discoloration and staining, concentrated along edges. Binding loose or detached in one corner. 3rd item: Minor scattered losses to fabric. Slight fading to pink fabric. Binding loose or detached in corners.
