Two Thomas Campbell (Tennessee, 1834-1914) East TN landscapes. 1st item: Oil on canvas river landscape depicting a young boy sitting upon a fallen tree on a riverbank fishing. Signed lower right "Quist". Housed in a carved giltwood frame. Sight: 9 1/4" H x 6 1/2" W. Framed: 12 1/4" H x 9 1/4" W. 2nd item: Watercolor on paper river landscape depicting a treelined rocky riverbank with rolling hills and mountains visible in the background. Signed mid-lower margin "Quist" and housed in a contemporary gilt wood frame. Sight: 6" H x 9" W. Framed: 16 1/8" H x 19 1/8" W. Note: Following Campbell's death his daughter Elizabeth Quist "finished" many of his paintings. Biography: Painting was a second career for Thomas Campbell, who immigrated to the United States at age 19, and was ordained as a minister in 1866. He and his family moved to East Tennessee in hopes a climate change would improve the health of his wife, Susan, but she died in 1892. At that point Campbell retired from the ministry and turned art, which had been his hobby, into his job. He founded the art department at Maryville College in 1902 and headed it until his death. His paintings were exhibited regionally and won several prizes and medals. He was also active in the Nicholson Art League, and was a talented wood carver who produced picture frames and small pieces of furniture. Campbell mostly painted pastoral landscapes.
1st item: Overall very good condition. Canvas shows evidence of light cleaning. 2nd item: Very light toning to paper, otherwise overall very good condition.
