Taro Yamamoto (American/Japanese, 1919-1994), two abstract expressionist compositions in watercolor/gouache on handmade paper. The composition in reds and blues also incorporates beach sand. Each signed "Taro Yamamoto" and dated "71" in the lower left and right corners, respectively, and measuring 16 1/2" x 10 1/2" sight, in contemporary black frames. Frames: 13 1/2" x 19 1/2" and 13" x 19". Biography: Taro Yamamoto, an American-Japanese non-objective painter, studied at the Art Students' League in New York. In 1953, he was awarded the Edward G. McDowell Traveling Fellowship to study for a year in Europe. He also did special study work at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in New York and the McDowell Colony, Peterborough, N.H., during the 1950s. His work was been exhibited on Cape Cod, New York, Paris, and Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he lived from the early 1950s.
Both with some foxing and light fading to signatures, not examined out of frames. The smaller, solid black frame has several deep scratches up to 1" L.
The estate of Thelma Schlicher, by descent from the estate of U.S. Ambassador Ronald Schlicher, Brentwood, TN. Note: Tennessee native Ron Schlicher entered the foreign service in 1982, working primarily in the Middle East. He returned to TN after retiring in 2011. Among his many diplomatic roles, he served as Ambassador to Cyprus, U.S. Principal Deputy Assistant Coordinator of Counterterrorism, and was director of the Iraq Task Force during the 2003 war with Iraq.
