Autograph Book featuring signatures of the Members of the House of Representatives, Tennessee Legislature, 1875-1876. Brown leather binding with gilt stenciled cover and gilt page edges. Includes signatures of leading Tennesseans of the day such as Hugh Dunlap Greer, former Lieutenant Colonel of the Tennessee 38th Regiment, Henry Richard Gibson, and Benton McMillin. Gibson, who was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1875-1877, went on to represent Tennessee's 2nd district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1895 to 1905. He wrote "May your recollection of me be as vividly photographed on your heart, as you are on mine. The name and image of yourself is enshrined in my memory." McMillin, who was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1875-1877, went on to represent Tennessee's 4th district in the United States House of Representatives from 1879 to 1899, was elected Governor of Tennessee (1899 to 1903), and served as a diplomat during the administration of President Woodrow Wilson, as Minister to Peru (1913ñ1919) and as Minister to Guatemala (1920ñ1921). He wrote "Mr. Giers:- For your kindness towards me, I will ever be thankful. I assure you that if every native Tennessean and foreign born Tennessean were as public spirited as you, our beloved State would be more prosperous." 3 1/2" H x 5 1/4" W x 3/4" D. Fragile condition. Binding on spine no longer present. Front and back pages completely separated from middle pages still bound together with thread. Leather worn and cracked, 2 5/8" crack on front cover. Toning on edges of pages.
