JOHNSON'S NEW ILLUSTRATED FAMILY ATLAS, WITH PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY, AND WITH DESCRIPTIONS GEOGRAPHICAL, STATISTICAL, AND HISTORICAL, INCLUDING THE LATEST FEDERAL CENSUS, A GEOGRAPHICAL INDEX, AND A CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR IN AMERICA, Deluxe full red leather folio issue, maps by Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827 - 1884) and Benjamin P. Ward, published by Johnson & Browning, (successors to J.H. Colton and Company) No. 118 Fulton Street, New York, 1863. engraved frontispiece illustration titled “American Atlas”. originally with 31 double-page maps and 27 single-page maps, all with fretwork borders. Approximately 15" W x 18 3/4" H. Note: This copy has additional plates numbered 55 and 56 illustrating the state of Illinois, between plates 51 and 52. Cartographica Extraordinaire available to the winning bidder.
Condition
Missing three maps, #1, #98, and #99. The binding is loose, and covers are detached at the spine and rubbed, with minor scattered wear and losses to leather, primarily to edges. Scattered toning and brown spotting throughout. Some losses to page edges from handling.
