10 Engravings and other prints of subjects including Meriwether Lewis after St. Memin, a Virginia Native American woman, the children of Charles I after Anthony van Dyck, John Quincy Adams, J.C. Hobhouse, Quakers, and more. 1st item: Aquatint on laid paper of explorer Meriwether Lewis in Native American garb, holding a rifle and knife, by William Strickland, after the portrait by Charles B.J.F. de Saint Memin, published in The Analectic Magazine and Naval Chronicle in 1816 (sheet 8 1/2" x 4 7/8"). Note: This scarce early-19th century image of one of America's most famous explorers is notable for a couple of reasons. The full-length image of Lewis was a significant departure for the artist Saint-Memin, who almost always portrayed his sitters in bust-length profiles. And artist William Strickland was more famous as the architect of the U.S. Mint and Bank of the United States and the Tennessee State Capitol. 2nd item: Lithograph on wove paper depicting the same image as #1 in black and white, with title "Lewis in Indian Dress by St. Memin from the original in possession of Mrs. Julia Clark Voorhis" (sheet 16" x 12"), undated but likely mid-late 19th century (Voorhis was explorer William Clark's granddaughter). 3rd item: "Dame de Virginie: Habit of a Lady of Virginia," circa 1760 engraving on laid paper depicting a young Native American woman carrying a basket or jar (sheet 10 3/4" x 8"). 4th-10th items include "The Children of Charles I" by W. French after Anthony Van Dyck; Sir Christopher Wren and Hugh Howard by Alexander Bannerman after Sir Godfrey Kneller (circa 1804); "St. Antoine de Padoue, Prechant aux Poissons" by J.P. Le Bas after Salvator Rosa; "Meeting in a Narrow Lane," Quaker subject matter, from the Laurie & Whittle series of Drolls possibly by Isaac Cruikshank; Portrait of J.C. Hobhouse, author of "The Miscellany"; and portraits of early Tennessee prominent figures Felix Grundy and Jo Conn Guild. Sheet sizes of 4th through 10th items range 6" x 9" to 9" x 11".
All with light toning, fading and discoloration, minor creases and foxing, overall good condition. Colored portrait of Lewis has 1 1/2" chip to top left edge. Black and white portrait of Lewis has 2 repaired tears lower right. Wren portrait has small losses to corners and left side. All prints except Quaker are encapsulated in protective plastic sleeves.
