Native Pottery bowl by Sofia de Tena.
Measurements:
11.50 inches in diameter x 3 inches high.
Sofia Sandoval de Tena (full name) comes from a first generation of potters from Mata Ortiz in Mexico whose style was first propagated by Juan Quezada Celado. Mata Ortiz pottery follows centuries old methods of pottery making inspired by Paquime'/Casas Grandes (a prehistoric archaeological site in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua about 60 miles from the U.S. border.)
Mata Ortiz pottery is completely hand made. After drying the pottery, the ollas (pots) are sanded, burnished with a polished stone and painted with natural oxides. Painting is done using only a brush made of human hair.
Mata Ortiz potters come from a community of fine ceramic artists that are renowned all over the world. This piece of pottery has geometric shapes with earthtone colors of tan, brown and rust.
