(Israeli, born 1928) Maquette for Three Times Three Interplay, 1970, one of two working models and aside from the later edition of 7, inconel steel, 20-1/2 in.. Notes: This work was commissioned by Mr. and Mrs.George Jaffin on behalf of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation and gifted to The Julliard School, Lincoln Center, New York City. On May 4, 1971, the work became the school‘s first outdoor sculpture. It was created with three moveable branches. At the dedication, Yaacov Agam described the work as, "not a statement, but a constant becoming, not a sculpture but many possibilities for one." He went on to state that, people could "perform" the sculpture, moving the three branches to "create new visual spaces, visually and sculpturally interpreting sequences of the work the way a musician plays a piece of music." The Lot is accompanied by an extensive archive, comprising correspondance, designs, photographs and brochures relating to the monumental work located at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts which includes: two original ink sketches of a preliminary design for the Lincoln Center Plaza; proposal folio of the artist‘s elevations (prints) of the final design installed and in various configurations; black and white photos og the artist inhis studio with a similar work; correspondance between Agam and Charles Lucas (facsimile); correspondance about images from Christine Roussel Inc (sculpture restorer); correspondance and plans concerning the restoration and reinstallation of the sculpture in 1993 much on The Julliard School letterhead; catalog Yaacov Agam; Transformables, May 1971, Galerie Denise Rene; copies of the Julliard News Bulletin; program of the dedication of the large work at The Julliard School; news clippings; photographs of the large scale sculpture at The Julliard School by Peter Schaaf; a group of photographs of the installation with some images of this maquette at the site and in the office of Charles Lucas, Controller, Vice President of Finance and Administration and principle liason to the Lincoln Center for the Arts for The Julliard School (1968-2000); a copy of a letter to Yaacov Agam, thanking him for the "model" of the large sculpture, dated May 28, 1971; black and white photographs of the artist assembling the sculpture at his studio with one inscribed and signed by the artist verso and another signed and inscribed to Charles Lucas recto; color photograph of the monumental sculpture signed "S. Williams 94" (Steve Williams) whose photograph appears on the cover of the Galerie Denise Rene catalog; and the bronze plaque for the monumental work "Yaacov Agam/Israel 1928-/Three By Three Interplay/Transformable Sculpture/Gift of Janet and George Jaffin"; and a crate.
