Richards.1883.", oil on canvas, 40-1/4 x 60-3/8 in.; fine 19th century gilt wood and composition Aesthetic movement frame crackle, remnant of varnish at right, scattered retouch affecting less that 5% of surface; lined, restrechted on new stretcher; frame with recent and fine conservation (report by William A. Lewin accompanies lot). Notes: Built in part by Richard, Earl of Cornwall in 1233, Tintagel Castle has long been associated with the legend of King Arthur. In Geoffrey of Monmouth's [Historia Regum Britanniae], written in the 12th century, Tintagel is referred to as the place of Arthur's conception. Sketches of Tintagel by William Trost Richards are held by the New York Historical Society and may be preliminary studies for this painting.. Provenance: Private South Carolina Collection
