Portrait bust of a Deputy Lieutenant of an English County, 1877, signed "G/1877", carved marble, 30 x 19-1/2 x 10 in.

He began to exhibit in the Royal Academy of Arts' summer exhibitions, often entering several sculptures at a time. Gleichen exhibited in the years around 1877 with sculptures of Lord Harlech (1430), Baron de Vahl (1434), Commander Goodenough (See: https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-63967), and Mr. Headly (1454). It is not known if this sculpture was one that was exhibited. The uniform worn by the sitter is that of a Deputy Lieutenant of an English county, a largely ceremonial civil appointment as deputy to the Lord Lieutenant of a county, acting as local representative of the Crown.
