20th century, comprising: tapering cylindrical vessel by Kurt Wallstab (German, born 1920), rainbow swirled design with cobalt base and border, etched signature "Wallstab" and dated "87" to base, further numbered "300487", 5-3/4 in.; two vessels by Matthias Klering (German, born 1930), flattened spherical form, swirled yellow, green and brown, black lip, etched signature to base, 4-1/2 x 5-1/4 in.; cylindrical vessel with swirls of blue, white and black, black lip, etched signature to base and dated "87", 7-1/4 x 3 in.
Note: Born in Germany in 1930, Matthias Klering first trained as a glass maker and in 1980 set up his own studio in Cologne. Since 1977 he has been engaged in lamp working. This technique of manipulating glass rods in an open flame was exploited by makers of Jugendstil art glass during the last decade of the 19th century. Klering's work gives a very clear illustration of the skill and coordination necessary when working in an open flame.
Provenance: Compositions, San Francisco, 1980s; Private Collection, New York
