A pair: Monsieur Charles Pécoul, in a russet coat, 36-3/4 x 28-1/2 in. (93 x 72.5 cm.); 37 x 28-1/4 in. (93.5 x 73 cm.), both shown seated, three quarter length, oil on canvas; matching, likely original Empire gilt wood and composition frames, 45-5/8 x 37-1/2 x 4 in.

Note: Marguerite-Charlotte Pecoul was the wife of Jacques-Louis David, and the daughter of Charles-Pierre Pecoul's first wife, Marie-Louise L'Alouette. It is thought that David painted his parents-in-law on the occasion of his second marriage to Geneviève Jacqueline Potain. This studio pair was painted circa 1784 after the originals, also executed in 1784 and are held by the Louvre (acquired in 1844). Laure Emilie Pecoul married Pierre Serizat whose portraits were painted by David in 1795. It is presumed that this studio pair were in their possession.

lined, crackle, retouch, conserved in 2022 with treatment reports and images by Sandra Kelberlau (accompanied by resume); frames re gilt, with abrasions

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
