(Virginia, 19th century) International Naval Rendezvous Hampton Roads, VA. April and May 1893, published, Norfolk, Virginia, Sam W. Bowman Lith., circa 1893, signed lower right in stone "H.S.P.", chromolithograph on paper, 27-1/2 x 40-1/2 in.; painted wood frame, toning, some creases, apparently not laid down, not removed from frame; frame with abrasions. Notes: This poster was used to promote the Naval Rendezvous in Hampton Roads, Virginia in 1893, one of the celebratory events leading up to the World's Fair in Chicago. Fleets from around the world were invited to assemble in Hampton Roads for a week of parades prior to sailing to New York. Views within cartouches are titled "The Monitor and Merrimac", "Trades Parade", and "Yacht Race". A prominent figure of Columbus figures strongly in the harbor. It was proposed but the idea quietly went away as enthusiam for the statue wained. There were 4000 prints pulled but few surface and appear to be rare.. Provenance: Private Collection
