1820 dated war claim for (Captain) Nicholas Van Rensselaer of New York, 16 x 9 in., framed 22 x 15 in. overall
Provenance: Private Charleston Collection
Note: Nicholas Van Rensselaer was with General Richard Montgomery during the Siege of Fort St. Jean when Montgomery became the first General to die in combat on Dec 31, 1775. Van Rensselaer later found himself under the command of General Philip Schuyler when Fort Ticonderoga fell to the British, which led to General Horatio Gates assuming command of the Northern department.
Nicholas Van Rensselaer was also engaged in the Battle of Saratoga where he was dispatched by General Gates to convey that General John Burgoyne had surrendered. As a pallbearer, Nicholas assisted in carrying the remains of General Montgomery in funeral procession through Albany in July of 1818.

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
