- Lot Description
circa 1770, each with a scalloped and carved crest over a pierced splat, over the rail upholstered serpentine seats, molded square legs with stretchers, blue and white checkered upholstery, 37-1/2 x 23 x 19 in.
Provenance: Mrs. Alice Darlington, Binghamton, New York; John Walton, New York; sold Sotheby's, New York, January 30, 1986, lot 610, for $37,000; Private Collection
Note: Sets of eight or more period American Chippendale chairs rarely survive. For a closely related set of New York dining chairs with nearly identical backs, differing by cabriole legs, see Sotheby's, New York, April 21, 2023, the Wolf Family Collection, lot 887, a set of 12 sold for $139,000.
Condition
overall the set is in very good condition, one chair with significant brakes, repairs and some small losses at crest rail and joint with rear stiles, other typical scattered cracks to pierced splats, some very minor repairs at rear feet, typical bumps and wear at legs, upholstery in good condition overall (rails not examined under upholstery)

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
