Fayetteville, 1800-1820, walnut case dramatically inlaid with bellflower chains, light wood lozenges and line inlay, two dovetailed drawers flanked by four doors, yellow pine secondary woods, probably original brass pulls, 37-1/4 x 58-1/4 x 20-3/4 in.
Provenance: Estate Antiques, Charleston, South Carolina; Property from Historic Dean Hall Plantation, South Carolina
Note: This impressive sideboard is from a small group of examples documented to the Fayetteville, North Carolina area. Closely related examples have been recorded by MESDA and several are illustrated in John Bivens, Jr. The Furniture of Coastal North Carolina, 1700-1820, see pages 438-441. MESDA research file McG32-2 is particularly closely related. The example offered here is slightly more diminutive and not as tall as some of those documented examples, but there is no indication of any height reduction to the legs, suggesting that this was perhaps a custom order. Most of the examples that are of taller form have an additional tier of drawers under the cabinet doors. The shallower case on this example gives it a particularly light feeling and pleasing proportions.
