attributed to John Swisegood or Mordecai Collins, Davidson County, North Carolina circa 1810, with barber pole inlaid top over four graduated dovetailed drawers with cross banded facings, inlaid with comma motifs set on original tall French feet, constructed with yellow pine and poplar secondary woods, 42-1/4 x 37 x 18-3/4 in.
Provenance: Property from Historic Dean Hall Plantation, South Carolina
Note: MESDA records several closely related barber pole and comma inlaid chests. See examples D-31652, S-440, S-1198, S-2893, and S-303602. While the design and details of the chest suggest this chest was made by John Swisegood, mitered corners of the cross banding on the drawers suggests it could also be the work of Mordecai Collins.
excellent condition overall, original feet and blocking in very good condition with only minor chips and repairs at toes, one side facing with possible shallow face patch (or veneer, possibly as made), possibly some original brass (no plugged holes, some pulls are possibly recasts), scattered repairs to inlay and banding, minor chip at back edge of top, other scattered typical surface wear and flaws
