Chippendale Carved Walnut Tall Case Clock
dial signed "George Hoff Lancaster" (1733-1816), 1770-1790, walnut with yellow pine, red cedar and poplar secondary, red-painted dial set with silvered chapter ring, elaborate bosses with traces of gilding, hood with pierce-carved pediment with floral rosettes, leaf-and-scroll carving and inlaid songbirds, waisted case with tombstone door set with shell-carved surround flanked by fluted corner columns, door with fine rattail iron hinges, period saddleboard (works and case probably a good match; see detailed photos), base with chamfered corners centering elaborate shell-and-drapery inlay, set on ogee bracket feet, 96-1/2 x 18 x 12 in., some wear and losses to gilding on spandrels, minor losses to black on Roman chapter ring, finials and plinth possibly replaced, one patch at lower corner of backboard, strip patch at back of case side, restorations and repairs to feet including replaced rear facings and blocking, front facings possibly original, inlay at base with pest damage at lower right corner, one small replaced element, surface losses to inscribed decoration, central diamond element with patch at one edge.
