for the South Carolina Palmetto Battalion Light Artillery, silk hand sewn construction, white stars in the form of a crescent and single star at center against a dark blue canton, coming with letter of authentication and research by Howard Madaus, flag itself approximately 40 x 65 in.; framed 46 x 71 in.
Provenance: formerly Charles Gunther Collection (and listed in his 1899 museum catalog, photocopies of which accompany this lot), later acquired and deaccessioned from Chicago Historical Society; Property from a Historic South Carolina Plantation
Note: This flag saw a number of engagements during the siege of Charleston and was finally retired when Charleston ultimately fell in February of 1865. Five years later, this same flag was carried by the South Carolina Color Guard in General Robert E. Lee's funeral procession.
You can find the flag illustrated in Stephen Sylvia's book The Illustrated History of American Civil War Relics on page 294 where Charles Gunther's collection is described as the largest ever assembled.

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
