(Edgefield, South Carolina, circa 1840s) attributed to the Collin Rhodes Pottery, Shaw's Creek, great example of the highly prized decorated Edgefield make,ÿ mellow speckled dark brown alkaline glaze over nicely rounded ovoid form, contrasting thick cream colored glaze runs at rim and neck continuing down shoulder over one of two applied lug handles, cream colored glaze drips at other handle as well, expertly applied elaborate iron and kaolin slip floral decoration, nicely positioned at shoulder and belly to both sides of the jar, four "slash" capacity marks under one handle, finely pulled ridged curved neck, tooled angled rim, 15 in.
Provenance: The Collection of Carl and Marian Mullisglaze voids and anomalies as made, 1/2 in. rim chip, evidence of professional restorations to large portions of the body of jar, various hairlines in floral decoration on one side of jar with large hairline running towards base, large hairline running around shoulder of jar with associated hairlines heading towards rim, star hairline at shoulder, evidence of hairlines on base, other minor hairlines, hairlines only visible under blacklight, illumination of base under blacklight, illumination to large portions of interior and interior base under blacklight, all hairlines are tight and stabilized
Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
