attributed to John Nutt, 1760-1770, retaining a fine early possibly original surface, with serpentine crest rail over a pierced splat, over the rail black leather upholstered seat, on square legs with stretchers, oak and cyprus secondary, 38 in.
Note: This chair was documented by MESDA and was examined by Brad Rauschenberg, Frank Horton, and Ann Dibble. in 1978 (see MESDA photo S-8213). It is illustrated in Rauschenberg and Bivins, Jr., The Furniture of Charleston, 1680-1820, vol. 1, pg. 382, fig. CCH-20. MESDA has a photograph of another chair from the same set.
Cabinet and chair maker John Nutt advertised in Charleston in the South Carolina Gazette in 1770 and is also known to have worked in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Accompanied by copies of photographs of the chair prior to re-upholstering.

excellent condition, retaining an early mellow surface, seat frame with later blocking, cracks and minor repair to crest rail at joint with one stile, old crack to medial stretcher, cracks and surface loss to rear stile at joint with left seat rail, legs with typical bumps and wear, modern leather upholstery in good condition
Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
