1750-1790, very highly figured cherry with sweetgum, white cedar, and yellow pine secondary, upper case with removable cornice over six highly figured drawers flanked by fluted quarter columns, conforming lower case with three drawers, set on ogee bracket feet, illegible chalk inscriptions on backboard, 80-1/2 x 48-1/2 x 25-1/4 in.
Provenance: Inherited circa 1962 by Mrs. W. T. Sheffield (Pickney Grovatt Sheffield) from her father William Moncure Grovatt of Blackstone, Virginia. Mr. Grovatt purchased the chest circa 1950 from Mr. Brockwell, who stated that the chest was originally made for Mr. Jerome Bonaparte and his American wife Elizabeth Patterson by a Philadelphia cabinetmaker; acquired by Colonial Williamsburg from Mrs. Sheffield in 1967; Property Deaccessioned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, Virginia; all proceeds to benefit the Collections Acquisitions Fund
good overall, brasses replaced, lower section of one front foot replaced, feet otherwise in very good condition with only minor repairs, patches at locks to two drawer dividers, other scattered very minor repairs, typical shrinkage cracks at case sides (see condition notes from Colonial Williamsburg Conservation Lab)
Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
