Boston, Massachusetts, circa 1740s, with very highly figured burlwood veneers, upper case with map drawer over five dovetailed drawers set with original engraved brasses and escutcheons, lower case with three additional drawers, dovetailed construction throughout with white pine secondary, cabriole legs and pad feet, 66-1/2 x 38-1/2 x 22-1/4 in., upper case width 34-1/2 in.
Provenance: Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Peter A. Pfaffenroth
Appears to retain original brasses. Close consistency between top and bottom drawers, there is a construction anomaly in the lower case - it appears that the dividers for the central lower drawer were moved slightly, suggesting an alteration or craftsman's mistake. If altered, however, the veneer on the lower center would be replaced or pieced out and there is no evidence of that. There has been some sanding to secondary surfaces on drawers and other typical minor repairs to drawers secondary. There are some minor molding repairs and restorations. Some small knee returns are restored. One backboard replaced and some top boards of lower case replaced and/or reset. Typical cracks and checking to veneers and other scattered flaws.
